You choose a bundle — 1 GB, 3 GB, 5 GB, 10 GB, 20 GB — with a validity window, install the QR code, and you're done. Maya Mobile is the newest of the three and has been quietly winning over remote workers and frequent travellers. The pitch is flexibility: solid data allowances at fair prices, painless top-ups, and no fuss about tethering — which matters if you're answering emails from a laptop in a Kadıköy café rather than just posting photos.

Turkey is not in the EU, so it sits outside almost every UK network's inclusive roaming zone. That single fact is why an eSIM pays for itself before you've left the airport.
Turkey usually falls into a "rest of world" or premium roaming zone on EE, O2, Vodafone and Three. In practice that means either a daily roaming pass of roughly £6–£8 a day, or — far worse — pay-as-you-go data measured in pounds per megabyte if you forget to add one.
A fortnight on a daily pass can therefore cost £85–£110, which is more than double the price of an unlimited eSIM for the same period. Some plans (certain Three and Vodafone add-ons) do include Turkey — check your own tariff in your network's app before you write roaming off entirely.

Turkey's mobile networks are genuinely good — often better than rural Britain. Travel eSIMs roam onto the same national networks locals use.

Expect strong 4G/LTE almost everywhere you'll realistically go, with 5G available in major cities as Turkey's rollout expands through 2026. Deep valleys around Göreme, remote stretches of the Lycian Way and some mountain roads will drop to slower speeds or nothing — normal anywhere in the world.

WhatsApp messaging works normally. Voice and video calling over some Turkish networks has historically been restricted at times, and travellers occasionally report calls failing on local connections. Because travel eSIMs connect as roaming visitors rather than as domestic local lines, users often find calling apps behave more like they do at home. It isn't guaranteed — if calling matters a lot, have a backup such as a hotel Wi-Fi call or an alternative app.
Turkey requires foreign handsets used with a Turkish domestic SIM to be registered against your passport after a limited period (historically around 120 days), with a substantial government fee. It catches out long-stayers who buy a local Turkcell or Vodafone TR SIM.
Travel eSIMs from Holafly, Airalo and Maya Mobile connect to Turkish networks as roaming partners, so ordinary holidaymakers on trips of a few days or weeks simply aren't affected. Quick test: on iPhone, open Settings → General → About and look for "Available SIM" or an EID number. On Android, dial *#06# — if an EID appears alongside the IMEI, your phone supports eSIM.

The reason UK travellers should buy one at all is that Turkey is outside the EU roaming arrangements, so it usually sits in an expensive "rest of world" zone on EE, O2, Vodafone and Three. It comes down to how much data you use. Airalo sells fixed bundles and is cheaper for light users — a 5 GB package covers a typical week of maps, messaging and light browsing for roughly £13.
